MTB Skills Courses

We are happy to book these courses at a time to suit you.  These courses are for anyone who enjoys riding a bike, from beginners looking to learn the basic techniques for off-road riding to the experienced rider who would like to develop their skills to gain extra speed, control and confidence.

Finely Tuned Ride is able to offer these sessions to individuals, pairs or even groups (including women only), for clubs or a group of riding friends, at a date to suit their schedule and time frame. To discuss your specific requirements with us please contact us.

Mountain bike skills courses

This course is held on a combination of fireroad and single-track terrain for riders who have never ridden off-road before or those who have had a go, but would like to hone their basic techniques. This session covers:
  • Bike check and set up
  • Body Position on bike
  • Footwork
  • Use of gears and brakes
  • Cornering basics
  • Basic Front wheel lift
£55 for 3 hour course.
The course will be held on a mixture of fireroad and singletrack, and is suitable for riders who are confident off-road and but would like to take their riding to the next level, advance their techniques, speed, control and confidence to use their new-found skills to beat their mates down the singletrack! The intermediate skills session will include a refresh of the beginner course as well as the following:
  • Advanced cornering
  • Climbing
  • Descending
  • Small drops
  • Front wheel lifts
  • Rear wheel lifts
  • Energy management
  • Line choice
  • Trail obstacles (including roots)
£75 for 6 hour course
Women only courses are exactly the same price and have the same content as either the beginner or Intermediate courses but without male riders (apart from the instructor that is!). Also covered in a little more detail are aspects such as bike set-up and women specific components. Both courses concentrate on body position and applying the correct technique in order to help you progress as a rider; it has little to do with upper body strength and power.
The parent & child skills session will cover the basic core skills in a fun way, that will include some serious family rivalry! For children and young people aged 10 to 16. One parent can bring one or more children to the course. The course runs for 3 hours and price is for 1 parent and 1 child, extra child can be booked at a reduced price of £25. Finley Tuned Ride, mountain bike courses are built around the Cyclist Touring Club’s (CTC’s) innovative mountain bike skills development framework. During your skills course, Rob, your instructor, will explain the benefits of breaking down your riding skills into core elements and how these elements provide the building blocks, which will become the foundations for your future riding successes.

Instructor Qualifications

Rob Rowe will be your skills instructor and holds the following qualifications:

  • CTC Skills Instructor
  • MIAS Level 2 (Mountain Bike Instructor’s Award Scheme)
  • British Cycling Level 2 Ride Leadership Award (Sky Ride)
  • Bikeability instructor
  • Rescue Emergency Care First Aid Certificate
  • Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checked

FTR is the first CTC approved instructor to provide skills courses in Wiltshire and offer not one, but two venues for your convenience.

Collingbourne Woods

Collingbourne Woods is a Forestry Commission wood located to the east of Salisbury Plain near the town of Ludgershall. Ludgershall is located approximately 25 minutes drive from Andover and 10 minutes from Tidworth. For a detailed location and to get directions to Collingbourne Woods click here.

Collingbourne Woods provides a good mix of fireroad and singletrack.


Erlestoke is home to the SPAM Winter Challenge, Erlestoke 12 and Blast events. It has also been host to regional cross country races as organised Southern XC and SAMS. It is located on the north western edge of Salisbury Plain, approximately 15mins drive from Westbury and 20mins drive from Devizes. PLEASE NOTE: Erlestoke is private Ministry of Defence property and must not be ridden outside course times. FTR have permission (and pay) to use this venue, however riding here outside course event times could jeopardise future access.

Erlestoke has some sweet single track as well as tough climbs but there is something for everyone to learn on.
